- Why do pool deck drains fail or need replacement?
- Florida's heat, UV exposure, and pool chemicals degrade plastic drain grates and frames over time. Cracks, warping, and broken grate tabs are common. Undersized or clogged drains also cause pooling water on the deck — a slip hazard and a source of algae growth. Replacing them restores proper drainage and safety.
- What is the difference between a standard large drain and a micro-drain system?
- Micro-drain channels look sleek, but their narrow 1"–2" opening clogs easily with debris, algae, and Florida's heavy rainfall overwhelms them fast. We typically recommend replacing micro-drains with larger NDS-style drains — the wider grate opening handles volume, stays cleaner longer, and is far easier to maintain. Most homeowners who've dealt with a flooded pool deck after a storm don't go back to micro-drains.
- Can you replace drains without tearing up the entire pool deck?
- In most cases, yes. We core-cut around the existing drain, remove the old assembly, and set the new drain at the correct height before patching and refinishing the surrounding concrete. Full deck demolition is rarely necessary unless the sub-base has failed.
